How to Install a UTV Winch in Under an Hour

Installing a winch is one of the most rewarding DIY jobs on a UTV. It's straightforward, requires basic hand tools, and the result is a machine that can get itself (and your buddies) out of almost any stuck situation. Here's how to do it.

What You'll Need

  • A UTV winch (3,000–4,500 lb rated)
  • A vehicle-specific winch mount plate
  • Basic socket set (10mm, 12mm, 14mm)
  • Wire crimpers and electrical tape or heat-shrink
  • Zip ties for wire routing
  • About 45–60 minutes
  • Step 1: Install the Mount Plate

Most mount plates bolt to the factory frame using existing holes — no drilling required. Remove the front bumper or skid plate as needed to access the mounting points. Torque the bolts to spec (typically 30–35 ft-lb).

    Step 2: Mount the Winch

Set the winch on the mount plate and align the bolt holes. Insert the mounting bolts from the top and secure with lock nuts underneath. Don't fully tighten yet — you may need to adjust the position once the fairlead is installed.

    Step 3: Install the Fairlead

The fairlead guides the rope or cable out of the winch. It bolts to the front of the mount plate. Make sure it's centered with the winch drum and level. Now go back and fully tighten the winch mounting bolts.

Step 4: Run the Power Cables

Route the positive and negative cables from the winch to the battery. Stay away from exhaust components and moving parts. Use zip ties to secure the cables to the frame every 12–18 inches.

Connect the positive cable to the battery positive terminal through the supplied circuit breaker. Connect the negative cable to the battery negative terminal. Make sure connections are clean and tight.

    Step 5: Connect the Remote

Plug in the wired remote control to the winch. If your winch includes a wireless remote, pair it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Mount the remote plug somewhere accessible from the driver's seat.

    Step 6: Test It

With the machine on flat ground and the parking brake set, spool out about 20 feet of rope. Hook it to a solid anchor and test the winch in both directions. Check that the rope spools evenly on the drum. Verify that the remote works reliably in both power-in and power-out.

    Pro Tips

  • Always spool the rope under light tension to prevent tangles. Never free-spool all the rope and then power-wind it back — this creates loose layers that bind under load.
  • Leave at least 5 wraps of rope on the drum at all times. The rope is attached to the drum with a set screw, not a knot — pulling it all the way out under load can yank the rope free.
  • Carry a pair of heavy gloves for handling winch rope. Synthetic rope can give you a nasty rope burn, and steel cable will cut your hands.
