LED Light Bar Buying Guide for Side-by-Sides

LED Light Bar Buying Guide for Side-by-Sides

Adding auxiliary lighting to your UTV transforms night riding from sketchy to spectacular. But with hundreds of light bars on the market, choosing the right one takes a little homework.

Beam Patterns

There are three main beam patterns, and each serves a different purpose:

  • Spot: A tight, focused beam that throws light far down the trail. Great for high-speed desert riding where you need to see 500+ feet ahead.
  • Flood: A wide, short-range beam that illuminates the area around your machine. Good for slow-speed rock crawling and camp lighting.
  • Combo: The most popular option — spot LEDs in the center with flood LEDs on each end. This gives you both distance and peripheral coverage.
  • How Many Lumens Do You Need?

Lumen counts on light bars range from a few thousand to well over 30,000. For most UTV riders:

  • 5,000–10,000 lumens: Good for moderate-speed trail riding where you have some ambient light.
  • 10,000–20,000 lumens: The sweet spot for most riders. Handles fast trails and total darkness.
  • 20,000+ lumens: Desert racing territory. You probably also need proper wiring, fuses, and potentially a second battery.
  • Wiring It Right

Every light bar needs a relay and fuse — don't wire it directly to the battery with just a switch. A relay lets a small switch current activate a larger power circuit safely. Most quality light bars come with a wiring harness, but check before you buy.

    Where to Mount

  • Roof: Maximum coverage but can create glare on the hood. Use a slight forward tilt.
  • Bumper: Lower profile, less wind resistance, and no hood glare. Range is shorter.
  • A-pillar pods: Great supplemental side lighting for tight switchbacks and intersections.
  • IP Ratings

UTV lights get hammered with water, mud, and dust. Look for IP67 at minimum — IP68 is better. An IP68-rated light can be fully submerged for a period without failure.

    The Takeaway

For a first light bar, a 30–40 inch combo-beam bar in the 15,000–20,000 lumen range mounted on the roof or cage is the most versatile setup. Add a pair of cube pods on the bumper for close-range fill light and you're set for most situations.
