Maintaining Your UTV for the Off-Season

Maintaining Your UTV for the Off-Season

Whether it's winter, monsoon season, or just a busy stretch where you can't ride, properly storing your UTV prevents costly surprises when you're ready to hit the trails again.

1. Wash It Thoroughly

Get all the mud, sand, and trail grime off the machine — especially the underside, suspension components, and radiator. Caked-on mud holds moisture against metal surfaces and accelerates corrosion. Use a pressure washer on the frame and a gentle spray on electronics and bearings.

2. Change the Oil and Filter

Used oil contains acids and contaminants that can damage internal engine surfaces over time. Fresh oil protects the engine during storage. Run the engine briefly after the change to circulate the clean oil.

3. Top Off the Fuel and Add Stabilizer

Fill the fuel tank to reduce the air space where condensation can form. Add fuel stabilizer according to the directions and run the engine for a few minutes to distribute stabilized fuel through the fuel system.

4. Remove or Maintain the Battery

A battery sitting unused for months will self-discharge and can sulfate permanently. Either remove the battery and store it indoors on a trickle charger, or connect a battery maintainer that plugs into the wall and keeps the battery at full charge.

5. Check Tire Pressure

Tires slowly lose air over time. Check and set all four tires to the manufacturer's recommended storage pressure. If possible, park on a wood or rubber surface rather than bare concrete to prevent flat-spotting.

6. Lubricate Cables, Pivots, and Bearings

Hit all the grease fittings on the suspension and steering components. Lubricate throttle and brake cables. A shot of chain lube or dry film lubricant on exposed pivot pins prevents surface rust.

7. Cover It Up

A breathable cover keeps dust off without trapping moisture. Avoid plastic tarps — they trap condensation underneath and can actually cause more corrosion than leaving the machine uncovered.

8. Inspect the CVT Belt

Remove the clutch cover and inspect the drive belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying. It's better to find a worn belt now than at the trailhead on the first ride of the season. Store a spare belt with the machine.

When You're Ready to Ride Again

Before the first ride, check all fluid levels, inspect the air filter, verify brake function, and do a slow test lap to check for any unusual noises. A 15-minute pre-season inspection beats a trailside breakdown every time.
